Sometimes being a furniture hoarder works in your favor, as evidenced by this “new” renovated, upcycled, decycled trash pick coffee table.
I originally found this coffee table when I was living in New York. There’s nothing quite like trash picking in NYC! At the time, it was perfect for my teeny, tiny NY apartment. I sanded it and painted it bright blue. I couldn’t find a picture of it before I painted it, but it was just dark wood.
When I moved to Oakland and then a year later to Charleston, I decided to upgrade to a larger coffee table, mainly because I had the space for it and my friend was getting rid of hers, so I nabbed it for free. But, I loved that little minimalist coffee table, so I kept it. Like I said…furniture hoarder.
In my new house in Charleston, I decided that I needed a bar cart and I thought the top of the old coffee table would be perfect. Because of its tray-like top, it almost looks like a Butler’s Tray. Of course, it wasn’t tall enough for a bar cart, so I took my jigsaw and chopped off the legs. I added hairpin legs and voila!
Fast-forward to 2016 and a new house. That larger coffee table just wasn’t working in the space – our living room is pretty tight in this home. I recently built a large bar/storage area, so the bar cart is no longer necessary. We’d outgrown him anyway since my husband is a beverage director and we have way too much alcohol in our house.
And finally, the wall that the bar cart was living on is soon to be demolished. So, I did what any normal DIYer would do. I decycled my upcycle for a recycle.
I removed the hairpin legs and added a simple a-frame leg to either side using 1×2 whitewood boards.
I’m not sure I love this version. Actually, I wish I could have the original upcycle with its skinny legs and cute little shelf. In any case, this is a nice stopgap while I search for the perfect coffee table for the space.
I still love that bright blue color!
And I’m glad to have a shelf again. The larger coffee table had a small drawer, but bottom shelves on coffee tables are just so perfect.
